      • Five Card Draw

Five card draw is the original form of poker. It is unclear when and where poker was created, although many agree that it was derived from a French card game called 'Poque'; the game was first seen in America on the riverboats of the Mississippi at a time when many French settlers were populating New Orleans.

Since those days, five card draw has declined somewhat; although it is still played in many home games across the globe, there is a noticable lack of five card draw action both online and in Brick & Mortar cardrooms.

        Understanding Five Card Draw

5 card draw is by far the simplest variation to Learn Poker, with just 2 rounds of betting and very little information to work with. Because of the lack of information, psychology and poker table position can play an important role.

The size of the ante should be a factor in determining your style of poker play; the bigger the ante, the looser you should play.

Table position is important, the later you act the better off you are because you have more information to work with and a greater chance of using the information to your benefit.

        Five Card Draw Tips

Studying your poker opponents style of play is of paramount importance in a game of limited information. Look for betting patterns in your opponents that you can use to your advantage later in the game.

Playing for straights and flushes is not advisable unless you have 3 cards to a straight flush, a pair before the draw is more valuable than a straight draw or flush draw.

When an opponent draws three cards, they most likely already have a pair; when an opponent only draws one card, they most likely have a straight draw, flush draw or two pair.

It is sensible to use a varied drawing strategy to make it harder for your opponents to work out what you are drawing to.
