How to Play 7 Card Stud Poker

7 Card Stud is a demanding form of poker played with 2 to 8 players, typically using a standard 52 card deck. There are 5 rounds of betting and an ante to contend with, plus a number of procedural differences that set it apart from other, more familiar poker variants. The winning hand is made from any 5 of the 7 cards dealt to you.

Please note in 7 card stud that 3 cards are dealt to each player and not 2 as shown below.

        Ante

Before a card has been dealt, every player must pay an ante, which is a small forced bet in order to induce action from the players at the table.

        3rd Street

Three cards are dealt to each player who ante'd up, the first 2 cards are face down and the other is face up. The first round of betting is started off by the player with the lowest ranking upcard and the action moves clockwise, as it does in all subsequent rounds of betting.

        4th Street

The 4th card is dealt facing up, but this time, the player with the highest ranking 2 upcards starts the betting off in this round.

        5th Street

The 5th card is dealt facing up, the player with the highest ranking 3 upcards starts the betting off in this round. In limit 7 card stud, the betting limits double on 5th street onwards.

        6th Street

The 6th card is dealt facing up, the player with the highest ranking 4 upcards starts the betting off in this round.

        The River

The 7th and final card is dealt facing down, there is one final round of betting started off by the player with the highest ranking 4 upcards. Once betting is complete, all remaining players showdown their Poker Hands and the highest ranking 5 card hand wins and takes down the pot. The rankings are decided by the standard Poker Hand Rankings
